France Horse Photography Workshop

Lavender, Sunflowers and Camargue Horses in the South of France!

June 23rd to July 1st 2019

Picture beautiful white horses running in the Camargue. Glorious Lavender and Sunflower fields bathed in exquisite light while the flowers fragrant aromas fill your senses. Lusitano horses, and the most picturesque villages in France.

With very special access for all our shoots, we will have the best of Provence and the Camargue laid out before us. Yes, people have been going there for decades for very good reason! Come along with us for the extra special events that tourists do not get to participate in. We'll stay out of the crowds and take advantage of the light of early morning and late evening. We will walk the paths and fields that so inspired Van Gogh and Bonnard and Cezanne.  Revel in the excitement of photographing the white horses thundering across the etang (a string of lagoons that stretch along the French coast).

This workshop lead by myself and professional photographer Jess Lee, giving everyone an unparrelled learning experience.  This workshop is going to be kept low key and fun. It is up to each individual as to the amount of learning they wish to receive. Everyone will see how we set up shots, know our settings, and we will be reviewing your images in camera between shoots.  Plus we have quite a few lively discussions during our drives to and from locations. Post processing will be offered for those interested during our mid-afternoon breaks when time permits.

Day 1 - 24 June Arrive Montpelier airport. Transfer to hotel in Aigues-Mortes.

Late afternoon, we will photograph some beautiful Lusitano stallions at a nearby ranch. Capture intense portraits of the feisty stallions against a ?moody? backdrop in an indoor arena, with a fleckle of natural light piercing through to light up the horses.
Day 2 Tuesday 25 June

No trip to the Camargue is complete without capturing the fabulous local birdlife and iconic Pink Flamingos. We will be accompanied by a BBC Wildlife bird specialist who has exclusive pre-dawn access to the wetlands park, long before it is opened to the public, enabling you to photograph the birds in the early morning light.

Late afternoon, we photograph the Wild White horses running through the marsh. We shoot several drives with the horses running across and towards your field of view. We will also take shots of the ?Gardians? (Camargue Cowboys) dressed in their traditional Camargue shirts & hats, trident in hand, surrounded by the herd as well as some close-up portraits of the ?weathered? ranchers.
Day 3 Wednesday 26 June

At dawn, we head to the beach to photograph a black stallion running along the white sand and in and out of the sea ? the black against the white of the beach and sea makes for a dramatic combination.

In the afternoon, we have another session with the horses running together through the shallow waters of the lakes, with a different composition & location. After the action, we take portraits of the horses on their own or in small groups, silhouetted against the sunset.
Day 4 Thursday 27 June

We head back to the beach for a shoot with a single white Stallion. We will photograph him dashing and diving in and around the sea and surf, as well as rearing on the top of the sand dunes, making for a wide range of dramatic action shots.

Late afternoon, we head back to the beach for the ultimate spectacle of the white horses running along the golden sand and in the sea as the sun sets in the surf spray! We also capture the horses in a peaceful lagoon with beautiful reflections.

Day 5 Friday 28 June

Relaxed morning to pack & have an early lunch before checking out of the hotel to depart for Provence.
Check in to the hotel and take time to unwind and unpack.

Late afternoon we set off for our first shoot to capture the picturesque village, nestled in the hillside, with the sun setting on its old mediaeval stone. We climb to the highest viewpoint to photograph the rooftops as the sun sets over the village below with its iconic church dominating the horizon.

Day 6 Saturday 29 June

At dawn, we set off to photograph the Lavender fields at sunrise in the pale morning light, dotted with small stone shepherd?s huts (Mazet) with the Alpilles mountains as a backdrop. We return to the hotel for breakfast and time to relax.

In the afternoon, we head back to the stunning Plateau, awash with beautiful blue lavender and sunflowers in full bloom ? a sight ? and scent ? to behold! We end the day by capturing the beautiful sunset over the lavender fields.

Day 7 Sunday 30 June

At dawn, we head for the wild and beautiful canyon and lake, described as one of the most picturesque sites in the South of France. On the way back, capture the blue lavender, golden wheat and sunflowers, geometrically aligned in the fields, their borders accentuated by almond trees and the villages in the valleys, stretching out as far as the eye can see.

We return to the hotel for breakfast and time to relax.

In the afternoon, we return to the plateau to photograph a single abandoned Mazet set on a sweeping hill of Lavender, as the sun sets.

Day 8 Monday 1 July

In the morning we take a panoramic view of the village at sunrise and then photograph the narrow streets with cobbled stones and pretty squares as well as the mini-gorge with small waterfalls and medieval houses.

Back to the hotel for breakfast & check out of the hotel before departing to Marseille, arriving at 12h30 to take your afternoon flight.
